Natalie returned to her hometown with her son. The literature teacher was Eli—the man she had left without explanation ten years ago. Ben saw their faces and asked, "You know each other?" The principal warned Eli to stay away from the "trouble parent." But Ben refused any other teacher. So Natalie kept coming back. She pretended. He pretended. Then, as she turned to leave, he whispered her old nickname. "Have you been okay?" She couldn't answer. Ben was already watching from the doorway. She thought she was just bringing home a son. She didn't know she was bringing home the answer Eli had waited a decade for.
